NSW Parliament begins an inquiry into the music and arts economy

An Upper House committee, made all of members from several major parties, has began an inquiry into the N.S.W. music and arts economy.

“The music and arts economy in New South Wales has been the subject of considerable debate and commentary in recent years, particularly following the implementation of the NSW Government’s lockout laws in 2014”, said Hon Paul Green MLC of the Christian Democratic Party, who chairs the committee.

“Roundtable meetings held by the NSW Government in the first half of 2016 to help inform the statutory review of liquor laws by the Hon. Ian Callinan AC QC saw key community, industry and government stakeholders have input into the preparation of a round table action plan.

“The Government provided their response in December last year, which supported most of the actions proposed. This inquiry provides a timely opportunity to consider the Government’s progress in implementing the plan, and consider other ways we can foster a vibrant music and arts economy both in Sydney and in regional New South Wales.”

Items under consideration include cultural policies such as permanent and temporary venue spaces, the Government’s response to the Night-Time Economy Roundtable Action Plan, realistic noise restrictions and environmental targets within local councils, and development applications for places of entertainment (you know dodgem cars centres, cafes, that kinda thing).

The committee is accepting submissions until 28 February 2018. For further information visit their website.
