How did the Hottest 100 impact the ARIA charts?

Success in the triple j Hottest 100 — aka: the largest music poll in the universe and the ultimate litmus test of the Australian public’s taste and musical recall during the sweltering summer months — often results in a spike in ARIA chart success. Ben Lee and The Whitlams are two Australian artists I can recall off the top of my head that saw their highest chart success in the weeks following a high placement in the Hottest 100. Often it will see albums leap back up the charts a half-year after their peak — as was the case with Powderfinger, in multiple years — while I don’t think it did much to improve the chart fate of Dennis Leary.

This week, Gang Of Youths were the big winners in both charts, landing three songs in the top 10 of the Hottest 100, resulting in their album Go Farther In Lightness moving from #28 to #4.

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN saw a decent rise (from #23 – #13), however this could also be attributed to his GRAMMY win, and the subsequent promo from that. Having said that, HUMBLE — which landed pole position in the Hottest 100 — rose significantly on the ARIA Singles chart, from #45 to #20 – a mighty rise given this is the song’s 44th week in the chart.

The song is 4X Platinum in the country, the equivalent of 280,000 sales although, we know how Kendrick’s label boss feels about streaming counting towards certification.

Lorde’s Melodrama — which housed #14 ‘Homemade Dynamite’ and #6 ‘Green Light’ — rose from #34 to #22 in the record’s 31st week in the ARIA chart, while Angus and Julia Stone’s ‘Chateau’ which landed the #3 position, rose in the Singles chart from #48 to #26.
