Kelly Clarkson admits she lost ‘millions’ from Dr. Luke disagreement

Kelly Clarkson has spoken out in a recent interview about how she lost thousands, if not millions of dollars by refusing a co-writing credit with controversial music producer Dr. Luke.

Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald, has been a controversial figure in recent years, becoming a household name due to a lawsuit by pop singer Kesha. The singer had claimed that Dr. Luke had sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused her, to the point where she almost took her own life. Kesha claimed that some of these instances dated back to as far as 2008.

Now, as Rolling Stone reports, Kelly Clarkson has stated that she had forgone a co-writing credit on her 2009 hit ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’, so as to avoid having her name associated with the music producer.

The American Idol winner recently spoke to US radio station Z100, during which time she addressed the situation. “I was making a point to the people working with me, going, ‘This is how much I don’t want to do this,'” Clarkson said. “I don’t care about the money. I don’t care about, oh, ‘You’re going to be the most famous person ever if you do this.’ That’s not what holds weight in my life.”

Kelly Clarkson noted that despite the fact that Dr. Luke was the initial author of the track, the significant amount of changes that she had made to the tracks means that she should have been given a co-writing credit.

“There’s a lot of times in my career where you don’t see my name on the song and that’s because sometimes I don’t write them,” she continued. “A lot of times I do change the song in a way that probably you should ask for credit, but I don’t because the song was already great – I just made it more me. I think a lot of artists steal credit a lot from writers, which I think is super crappy because that’s their livelihood.”

“They brought up writing credit at the end,” she concluded. “They were like, ‘Well, you changed the song.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t want my name near his. I want to pretend this didn’t happen in my life and I want to forget it.'”
